Caring For Your New Fence

Updated: Feb 1

Timber Paling Fence

Your timber fence is made from treated pine palings and rails, with hardwood posts and it could also have a plinth board or a sleeper underneath.

You love the look of your new fence, but how do you keep it looking good, and make it last as long as possible. The first thing that comes to mind for most is **PAINT. Great idea, it helps seal the timber and preserve it, however your timber fence is quite "wet" when its built from the treatment to keep it safe from Termites, fungal decay and borers. Therefore you must wait a minimum of 3 months to allow the timber to dry out, and if you and your neighbour want to paint the fence at the same time, it is recommended you wait a minimum of 4 months before sealing both sides with paint. This ensured then timber is completely dried out and the paint will adhere properly.

Colorbond Fence

Your new colorbond fence is is made with a Zincalume core, then a baked on corrossion inhibitor and sealed with a tough painted finish. Colorbond Steel complies with and is made for Australian conditions, and carries a 10 year Bluscope warranty.

There are alot of inferior products being used so make sure your contractor uses only the real deal.

Caring for colorbond is easy. Just ensure the bottom is kept free from dirt and leaves (This prevents moisture build-up in the bottom that can cause erosion). Hose them off to clean off dirt and cobwebs. Keep trees and obstacles away from the surface and you will be ensured of getting many many years of a good looking fence.

This is a perfect example of what happens to colorbond fences when they are not cared for. Dirt, leaves and debris were left in the bottom track and together with moisture over time it has caused the bottom to rust and deteriorate.
